ニューヨーク州の北西部フィンガー・レイクス地方の、ケイユガレイクという湖に寄り添うようにあるオーロラ村。広さは約2.4㎢、人口は700人あまりで、小さくてとても素敵なオーロラ村に、僕が初めて行ったのは、1993年だっただろうか。

初めて訪れたときに、”ブラックホール” と呼ばれる黒い大きなナイロン製のバッグに何足も何足も詰め込んで、持ち上げられないほど重い思いをして日本へ持ってきたオーロラシューズ。

目まぐるしい世の中にあっても、今も変わらずマイペースで丁寧なものづくりをしている。

このオーロラシューズの素晴らしさを改めて皆さんに伝えたいと思い、友人のフォトグラファー高橋ヨーコと、オーロラ村とアメリカ西海岸ロサンジェルス、モントレー、サンタ・クルーズ、サンフランシスコを旅して回り、そして最後に葉山へ帰ってきた。

30年前から少しずつ進化を続けているオーロラシューズの今までと、今、そしてこれからを、記憶と記録に収める１冊になったと思う。

そして何より、この靴を履いて旅に出ていただけたらと願ってやまない。

The village of Aurora is in the Finger Lakes region of northwestern the state of New York, nestled on Cayuga Lake. The village is about 2.4 square kilometers in size and has a population of just over 700 people. I think it was 1993 when I first visited this small and lovely village.

Thirty years ago, when I come back to Japan with Aurora Shoes for the first time, I was carrying them in a huge and heavy black bag called “Black Hole”. The bag was literally full and so heavy that I could hardly lift them.

In this fast-paced world, Aurora Shoes continues to create its products at its leisurely pace, with a focus on quality and craftsmanship.

 In order to tell how great these Aurora shoes are, my friend photographer Yoko Takahashi and I embarked on a journey to the village of Aurora, Los Angeles, Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Francisco on the West Coast of the United States, before finally returning to Hayama.

This booklet aims to capture the past, present, and future of Aurora Shoes, which has evolved gradually over the last 30 years, through memories and records.

We hope that as you peruse this booklet, you'll experience a sense of nostalgia mixed with newness, and that you'll be inspired to wear these shoes on your Journey .
